Electric Thames

Electric-Thames-scaled

What we will do and why

Part of a broader context of global decarbonisation efforts in the maritime sector, the project aims to link the needs of the vessel operators with the shore-side infrastructure and provide a shortlist of suitable sites. This project made recommendations which developed in to our ElectriQuay project.

Key deliverables

  • Deliver a report for widespread adoption of clean maritime solutions within the UK Power Networks area and how this can be extended to the remainder of the River Thames and the wider UK market.

Target outcomes

  • To investigate the decarbonisation of the river through electrification of vessels whilst keeping CAPEX as low as possible, minimising the impact on the electricity network and exploring offsetting of costs to operators by exploring V2G and flex options. It is also key to not disrupt river borne operations whilst transitioning.

Measures of success

  • Development of a whole system plan across the marine and electricity sectors, built collaboratively with local authorities and other key stakeholders.

Planned start:

01.04.2023

Target completion:

31.03.2026

Key milestones:

  • Route and fuel consumption analysis
  • Understand operational scenarios
  • Translating needs into power requirements
  • Locational connections assessments
  • Assess site viability
